Parks for Life

Hackney Council - Parks for Life Campaign - Summer 2010

The Hackney "Parks for Life " event was organised by The Borough of Hackney to promote use of their open spaces and sports and social facilities in the borough. The events were held in their parks, leisure centers and other sports centers, over the course of the summer of 2010. It was also to bring to public attention the wide range of activities, clubs and services available within the borough. The specific events were also meant to be an enjoyable day out for everybody, where they can see and sample most of the activities being promoted.

London Fields event 22nd May 2010

May 22nd May was a beautiful early summer's day and the event in London Fields park in the centre of Hackney was very well attended. The park was full with people enjoying all that was on offer at the event, including the Tai Chi demonstration and workshop that we provided.

You can also view other photos and a video of the demonstration on the wall of our Facebook page.

The demonstration was scheduled to last about 20 minutes and comprised:

  • Hand form demonstration
  • Form applications demonstrations
  • Push Hands and two person sparring set demonstration
  • Sabre Form Demonstration

The team was : Don Spargo, Neville Cote, John Willshire and Marcos Patchett.

Hackney Council were kind enough to have a stall set up for us. This was staffed at various times by different members of the academy. At the stall we could talk to people interested in learning Tai Chi, and hand out leaflets and flyers. However we soon found out this not only included enquiries about our classes but also people wishing to share their interesting and unusual experiences of Tai Chi with us.

Shoreditch Park event 22nd August 2010

This event was not so well attended as the London Fields event, but this was probably due to the fact that it was a blisteringly hot day, and there was very little shade in this park.

However we managed to go ahead with the demonstration and workshop as the embedded video shows.

The demonstration and workshop lasted about 30 minutes and comprised a hand form demonstration, a workshop that involved Tai Chi walking and the Brush Knee form and finished with some demonstrations of Tai Chi form applications.

Click on the play button in the embedded video to see a sample of what happened. The video lasts about 8 minutes.

Please note this embedded video uses Windows Media Player to play the clip. Versions for other players will be available soon.
